Well, let me tell ya, this Linux thing on my Asus Eee Box, it’s slower than molasses in January. I ain’t no computer whiz, but even I can tell something ain’t right. It’s supposed to be all fast and fancy, but it’s chuggin’ along like an old tractor pullin’ a heavy load.
First off, I got this here Eee Box, right? It’s a cute little thing, sits right on my desk. But when I put that Linux stuff on it, oh boy, did things go south. Windows, now that was quick. Zoom, zoom, zoom, everything opened right up. But this Linux? It takes its sweet time, that’s for sure. You click somethin’, and then you wait. And wait. And wait some more. Sometimes I think I could go make a whole pot of coffee before it decides to do what I asked.
Folks online, they talk about all sorts of things. They say somethin’ about the “kernel” and “PAE” and all that jibber jabber. Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me. All I know is, it ain’t workin’ right. They talk about “Ubuntu” and “Lubuntu” and “Puppy Linux.” Lord, so many names, makes my head spin! It’s like tryin’ to keep track of all my grandkids’ names at Christmas dinner.
- Some folks say my Eee Box just ain’t made for Linux.
- They say somethin’ about a “GMA 500 chipset” bein’ bad news.
- Others say I gotta mess with the “BIOS” and the “boot order.” Sounds complicated. I ain’t touchin’ nothin’ I don’t understand, or I’ll end up breakin’ the whole dang thing.
I even tried installin’ it different ways. Used that “Wubi” thing first, then tried messin’ with a “USB stick” and the “CDROM.” Nothin’ seemed to make a lick of difference. It’s still slow as a turtle in peanut butter.
And the internet! Don’t even get me started on the internet. Some smarty-pants on the forums says it all depends on your internet speed. Well, I got decent internet, I think. But even then, this Linux thing is pokey. Loadin’ web pages feels like watchin’ paint dry. And don’t even think about watchin’ videos, unless you like watchin’ ’em one frame at a time.
It’s just plain frustrating, you know? I got this little computer, and I just want it to work. I want to check my email, look at pictures of my grandkids, maybe even watch a funny cat video or two. But this Linux thing is makin’ it harder than milkin’ a cow with arthritis.
Now, some people, they say it’s because my Eee Box is old. Maybe so. It ain’t the newest model, that’s for sure. But it worked just fine with Windows. So why is Linux givin’ it such a hard time? It’s a mystery to me, like why cats always land on their feet, or why politicians can’t seem to tell the truth.
I even heard tell of somethin’ called “Raspberry Pi.” They say it’s a little computer, even smaller than my Eee Box, and it runs Linux just fine. Now, that just don’t seem fair, does it? A tiny little thing like that can handle it, but my Eee Box is huffin’ and puffin’ like it’s runnin’ a marathon.
I’m about at my wit’s end with this thing. I might just have to go back to Windows, even though I hear that ain’t so good either these days. At least it was fast, you know? Or maybe I’ll try that “Puppy Linux” thing. Sounds kinda cute, maybe it’ll be easier to handle. But then again, I might just end up with another slowpoke on my hands.
All I know is, somethin’ gotta give. This Linux on my Asus Eee Box is just too slow. It’s like tryin’ to drive a car with the brakes on. I just want a computer that works, not one that makes me wanna pull my hair out. And believe me, at my age, I ain’t got much hair left to pull.
If anyone out there has any ideas, and can explain it to me like I’m five years old, I’m all ears. But no fancy talk, you hear? Just plain English, so even an old lady like me can understand.
