Okay, so, I wanted to play some old games the other day. These games can only run on Windows XP, so I thought, why not install it in VirtualBox? I downloaded the ISO file and then started setting up a new virtual machine.
Everything was going smoothly. I allocated the RAM, set up the hard drive, and started the installation. The initial steps were pretty straightforward – format the drive, copy the files, the usual stuff. But then, boom! It asked me for a product key.
Now, I didn’t have a product key on hand. I thought maybe I could skip it and activate it later, but no luck. The installation wouldn’t proceed without a valid key. So I did what anyone would do – I turned to the internet.
I started searching for “Windows XP product key” and found tons of forum posts and articles. Some suggested using generic keys, while others talked about specific keys that might work. I even found some websites that listed a bunch of keys to try.
I tried a few of these keys, and to my surprise, one of them actually worked! I found it on a random forum, in the comments section. The key was something like “MRX3F-47B9T-2487J-KWKMF” – I don’t remember exactly, but it was similar to this. I typed it in, hit enter, and bam! The installation continued.
After the key was accepted, the rest of the installation was a breeze. I just had to wait for it to finish, set up a user account, and that was it. I had a working Windows XP virtual machine.
But the story doesn’t end there. After a few days, I booted up the virtual machine and got a message saying that Windows needed to be activated within 30 days. Oh boy, here we go again. I tried to activate it online, but that didn’t work. It kept saying the activation server was unavailable.
So, I went back to the internet for help. I found some more instructions on how to activate Windows XP, and one method involved using the command prompt. The instructions said to open the Run window and type in “%systemroot%system32oobe* /a”. I did exactly that, and it opened the Windows Activation Wizard.
Unfortunately, even after following the steps in the wizard, I couldn’t get it to activate online. I guess the online activation for XP is completely dead.
I did find another method that talked about activating by phone. The idea was to call a Microsoft customer service number and activate it that way. I haven’t tried this yet, I didn’t have time to deal with it at that moment, I just wanted to play those old games!
To get those games running in my windows xp virtual machine, I had to follow the below steps:
- Tried several Windows XP product keys found online until one worked to proceed with the installation.
- Entered the product key during the Windows XP installation process.
- Completed the rest of the installation and booted into Windows XP.
- Attempted to activate Windows XP online using the command “%systemroot%system32oobe* /a” but failed.
It’s a bit of a bummer that online activation doesn’t work anymore, but at least I could install it and use it for now. I can still play my games. Maybe I’ll try the phone activation later, but for now, I’m just happy to have a working Windows XP setup, even if it’s not activated.
It’s kinda funny how tricky it can be to get old software running these days. You’d think it would be easier, but sometimes it feels like you need to be a tech wizard to figure it all out!
