Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with making a map of Andros Island in the Bahamas. I’ve always thought that place looked super cool on the map, with all those little islands and waterways.
First, I grabbed a basic map outline of Andros from somewhere – just a plain one showing the general shape of the landmasses. Nothing fancy, just enough to get me started.
Getting the Lay of the Land
Then I started looking up more detailed info about the different parts of Andros. You know, like where the main settlements are, the different “bights” (those are like inlets or bays), and any major roads or landmarks. I just used regular search tools and a couple of Bahamas-focused websites to find this stuff.
- North Andros
- South Andros
- Mangrove Cay
Once I had a decent amount of info, I started adding it to my basic map. I drew in the main roads, not a ton in the south part, just the one main one. It is not easy to drive down. I marked the settlements with little dots, and for the bigger ones, I added the names using a simple text tool. It’s pretty sparse, but I wanted to show that.
Adding Some Details
Next, I focused on the water features. Andros has a ton of these “bights” cutting through it, so I made sure to draw those in as accurately as I could. I also added little labels for the major ones like the North Bight, Middle Bight, and South Bight.
I also noticed that there are some pretty big differences in the landscape between the east and west sides of Andros. The east side is where most people live and where the barrier reef is, so I made a note of that on the map. The west side is mostly undeveloped and has a lot of wetlands, so I used a different color to show that.
Finally, I added a simple legend to explain the symbols and colors I used. Nothing too complicated, just enough to make the map understandable.
It’s definitely not a professional-grade map or anything, but it was a fun little project. And now I feel like I know Andros Island a lot better than I did before!
