Today I spent a good part of my morning messing with this old machine, trying to fix this “Windows 95 protection error” I kept running into. Honestly, I thought it would be a simple fix, but boy, was I wrong.
I started by double-checking some stuff, like the service tag thingy, and I even downloaded that repair tool again. No luck. Still staring at that annoying error message.
Then I remembered something about Virus & threat protection in the Windows Security thing on my PC. I figured maybe something wonky was going on there, so I opened it up to take a look.
I’ve got this Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which is supposed to be built right into the system. My computer is running Windows 11, so it should be front and center, doing its job. It’s got all these other features, too, but that’s a whole other can of worms.
Here’s the thing though, when I tried to get Windows 10 up and running earlier, the Security thing was supposedly already on and scanning for malware and viruses, basically anything that could mess with your system. That did not work either.
I also stumbled upon something called Secure Boot. Apparently, it’s part of this UEFI thing, and it checks the signatures of system files and drivers when you boot up. I thought maybe the error was because Secure Boot wasn’t recognizing the signature of the update file. That’s a dead end, too.
And there’s also BitLocker. This one is supposed to be a data protector. You know, like if your laptop gets stolen or lost, it keeps your files safe. It’s supposed to work with the operating system, but honestly, I am not even sure what that means.
I even tried messing around with the Account protection settings, thinking maybe it was a sign-in issue or something related to my Microsoft account. You can manage all that stuff from there.

The Steps I Tried
- Checked service tag and re-downloaded the repair tool.
- Looked into Virus & threat protection settings.
- Checked out Secure Boot and BitLocker options.
- Tried adjusting Account protection settings.
After all that, I’m still stuck with this protection error. It’s like this computer is just determined to give me a hard time. I swear, sometimes these old machines are more trouble than they’re worth. I guess I’ll have to keep digging to figure this out.
