Today I am going to show you how I made an Android automatic watch. Yeah, it sounds a bit tricky, but it’s actually not that hard. So, I got this idea to create something that could keep track of time on its own, just like an automatic watch. You know, without having to wind it up or anything.
First, I gathered all the stuff I needed. I grabbed an old Android phone that I wasn’t using anymore. I also got some basic tools like a screwdriver and some wires, just regular things you can find around the house. Then, I started by taking the phone apart. I carefully removed the back cover and took out the battery. It’s pretty straightforward, just unscrewing a few things here and there.
Next, I needed to figure out how to power the phone without the battery. I decided to use a small solar panel. I found one online, nothing fancy, just a basic one that could generate enough power for the phone. I connected the solar panel to the phone’s battery connectors using those wires I mentioned earlier. I just soldered them together, making sure the positive and negative ends matched.
- Remove the back cover of the old Android phone.
- Take out the battery.
- Find a small solar panel.
- Connect the solar panel to the battery connectors.
- Solder the wires carefully.
After that, I worked on the software side of things. I installed a custom ROM on the phone. This allowed me to have more control over the system. Then I looked for a simple watch app that could run in the background all the time. I found a few options, but I picked one that was lightweight and didn’t use too much power.
Software Setup
- Install a custom ROM.
- Find a lightweight watch app.
- Configure the app to run continuously.
I configured the app to run continuously, even when the screen was off. This way, it could keep track of the time without draining the power from the solar panel too quickly. I also disabled all the unnecessary features and apps on the phone to save power. Things like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and background data were all turned off.
Then came the fun part, putting it all together. I found an old watch case that I liked. I carefully placed the modified phone inside the case, making sure the solar panel was exposed to light. I had to make some adjustments to the case to make it fit properly, but nothing too complicated. Just some cutting and gluing here and there.
Once everything was in place, I tested it out. I left the watch under the sun for a few hours to charge up the solar panel. And guess what? It worked! The watch app was running smoothly, and the time was accurate. It was pretty cool to see it working just from the power of the sun. It felt so great when I finally made it.
I’ve been using this automatic Android watch for a while now, and it’s been working great. I don’t have to worry about charging it or winding it up. It just keeps ticking as long as there’s some sunlight. Of course, it’s not perfect. It doesn’t work well indoors or at night, but it’s a fun project, and I’m happy with how it turned out. If you want something unique and enjoy tinkering with things, this is a pretty cool project to try. I am happy to share my whole process with you guys!
