Alright, so I’ve been using Spark Mail on my phone and my Mac for a while now, and I really like it. But here’s the thing – I spend a ton of time on my Linux machine too, and I was really itching to get Spark Mail on there as well. I did a bunch of searching online, and guess what? No official Spark Mail app for Linux. Bummer, right?
But hey, I wasn’t about to give up that easily. I mean, there’s gotta be a way, doesn’t there? So, I started digging deeper. I figured maybe I could somehow run the Android version on Linux. I knew the basics – Spark runs on both Windows and UNIX-like systems (e.g. Linux, Mac OS). That made me think, okay, this might be doable.
My Experiment with Waydroid
First things first, I needed an Android environment on my Linux box. I’d heard about Waydroid, which seemed like a good bet, so I installed it. It was pretty straightforward, just a few commands in the terminal. But once I got it running, I ran into a snag. I couldn’t get Google Play Services to work, which meant no Play Store, and that meant no easy way to install Spark Mail.
I messed around with Waydroid for a bit, trying different things, but no luck. It was a bit frustrating, but I wasn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.
Trying Out the Browser Version
Next, I thought, “Okay, maybe I can just use Spark Mail in my browser.” I went to the Spark Mail website, and it turns out they have a web version. Sweet! I logged in, and it worked okay, but it wasn’t the same as having a dedicated app. Plus, I wanted those sweet desktop notifications.
So, I was back to square one, still wanting that native app experience on Linux.
Giving Up… For Now
After all that, I decided to take a break from it. I figured I’d just stick with the browser version for now and maybe check back later to see if anyone had come up with a better solution. It’s not ideal, but hey, at least I can still use Spark Mail on Linux, even if it’s not in the way I originally wanted.
But you know what? This whole experience got me thinking more about Linux and its limitations when it comes to certain apps. It’s a bit of a bummer that we don’t have more options sometimes.
- First of all, I just tried to install Waydroid by some commands.
- Then, I found I can’t install the Spark Mail app because of the Google Play Services issue.
- So, I tried the Spark Mail web version, but I still want a native app.
- Finally, I give up, that’s all of my tries about Spark Mail on Linux.
Anyway, that’s my story of trying to get Spark Mail on Linux. Maybe one day, we’ll have an official app, or maybe someone will figure out a way to get the Android version running smoothly. Until then, I’ll be here, using the browser version and keeping my fingers crossed. Who knows, someone might find sbt/activator shell command package to create a jar file to make it possible.
