Recently, I upgraded my iPhone to iOS 17, and I have been messing around with the new features. Everything was running pretty smoothly until I ran into a weird issue with the location sharing. It just stopped working, which is kind of a big deal for me since I use it a lot to keep track of my family’s whereabouts. So, I tried to turn on location sharing. I went through the settings, making sure everything was in the right place, just like how we’re supposed to set it up. But it just wouldn’t work.
I even dragged my friend to the Apple Genius Bar to get their take on it. The Apple guys poked around my phone’s settings but came up empty. The weird thing is, it wasn’t just me. I saw some online forums where folks were saying they had similar problems after updating to iOS 17. They talked about how the location sharing would freeze or not update at all. Some even mentioned this issue was still around in iOS 18 beta.
It was a relief to know I wasn’t the only one facing this, but it was still frustrating. I mean, location sharing is pretty useful, especially when you’re trying to meet up with friends or make sure your family is safe.
My attempts to fix it
So, I started troubleshooting. First, I decided to reset the location and privacy settings on my iPhone. It’s a common fix for these kinds of glitches. I went into the settings, found the right section, and did a full reset.
- Went to Settings.
- Tapped on General.
- Scrolled down to Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Chose Reset.
- Selected Reset Location & Privacy.
After that, I tested the location sharing again, hoping that it would kick it back into gear. But nope, it still didn’t work. The location just wouldn’t update, no matter what I did. It was like my phone was stuck in one place, even though I was moving around.
I even went through all the basic checks. I made sure my internet connection was stable, I toggled airplane mode on and off, and I even restarted my phone a couple of times. But nothing seemed to make a difference. The location sharing feature was completely busted.
Still no luck
Even after all that, the location sharing was still not working. It was a bummer because I rely on this feature quite a bit. But I guess it’s just one of those things that happen with new software updates. There are bound to be a few bugs here and there.
I’m hoping that Apple will roll out a fix soon in an upcoming update. Until then, I’ll have to make do without live location sharing. It’s a bit inconvenient, but not the end of the world. I can still manually update my location when needed.
So yeah, that’s my experience with the location sharing issue on iOS 17. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a solution soon. If any of you have faced the same problem or found a workaround, feel free to share. We’re all in this together!
