Well, let me tell you, this whole computer thing is a mess. My grandson, he’s always on that darn thing. Says he’s learning, but it looks like a bunch of blinking lights to me. He tried to show me something called Office 365 the other day. Said it’s where you write your letters and such. Back in my day, we just used a pen and paper. Much simpler, I tell ya.
He kept goin’ on about somethin’ called “Linux.” Sounded like a new type of linoleum floorin’ to me. But no, he says it’s some kind of computer magic that makes the whole thing work. Honestly, it’s all beyond me. All these new words and gadgets. I reckon that if the good lord wanted us to type, he would have gave us a typewriter.
Office 365, What in Tarnation?
So this Office 365, it’s like a whole bunch of programs all bundled up. You got your word thing for writin’ letters, that Excel thing for makin’ lists, and a bunch of other stuff I can’t rightly recall. My grandson, bless his heart, he tries to explain it, but it just goes right over my head. He showed me how to type a letter once. Took me half an hour just to find the darn “A” key!
But he says it’s important now. Everyone’s usin’ it. He even said you can use it to talk to people far away, like a fancy telephone. I told him I already got a phone, and it works just fine. I say, why use the new one if the old one is still good? Don’t fix it if it is not broke, right?
Linux, Is That Some Kind of Animal?
Now, this Linux thing, that’s a whole other can of worms. My grandson, he says it’s like the engine that makes the computer go. He says it is good and you can rely on it, but some people don’t like it. And he said that using office 365 on Linux is like puttin’ fancy shoes on a pig. It just don’t quite fit right. But others say it works just fine. I don’t know who to believe anymore.
- He says some folks use it instead of that Windows thing.
- Says it’s more reliable, like an old mule.
- But it’s different, he says, like learning a whole new way of talking.
- And Office 365 don’t always work so good on it, some smart people said.
I heard him talkin’ to his friends about “SUSE” Linux. Said it’s a good one. Don’t ask me what that means. Sounds like a name of an old lady in our neiborhood. But it’s too many names, too many new things. I can’t keep up with all of them.
Can You Put That Office Thing on That Linux?
So, can you use that Office 365 on that Linux? Well, my grandson, he says kinda, sorta. He says that you have to use that browser, but it is not as good as using it in other ways. It’s like tryin’ to put a square peg in a round hole. You can do it, but it ain’t pretty, and it is hard. And you need to know some tips and tricks to get it work.
He said there are other ways to write things on that Linux. There are other programs like Office 365, but they are not that one. Some people said that they are good, though. But if you really want to use office 365, it is best to use it on mac or windows. Because they are made for it. And you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, as they say.
There’s a fella down the road, says he got it workin’. But he’s one of them computer whizzes. Spends all day tinkerin’ with those machines. Me, I’d rather be out in the garden. At least the plants make sense.
It’s All Too Much for Me
Honestly, this whole computer business is just too much for an old lady like me. I like things simple. A good book, a cup of tea, and some peace and quiet. That’s all I need. But the world keeps changin’, I reckon. And these young folks, they’re all about these newfangled gadgets.
Maybe I’ll try to learn a bit more about it someday. But for now, I think I’ll just stick to my knitting. At least I know how that works. And if I make a mistake, I can just unravel it and start again. Can’t do that with a computer, can you? Once you mess it up, it’s messed up for good. And then you have to call one of them computer fellas, and it is going to be expensive.
So, if you’re thinkin’ about puttin’ that Office 365 on that Linux, just be warned. It ain’t as easy as pie. You might need to get yourself a smart young’un to help you out. Or just stick with what you know. That’s my advice, anyway. Take it or leave it. It is a hard thing to do. But young people know how to do these things.
