Okay, so today I was messing around with this “Pathfinder” thing on my Android phone, and I figured I’d jot down what I did and how it went. Nothing too fancy, just a regular dude trying to figure some stuff out.
First off, I got curious about Pathfinder after hearing some folks talk about it. Sounded like some kind of role-playing game, kinda like Dungeons and Dragons, which I dabbled in back in the day. So, I hit up the Google Play Store to see what’s up. Found a few apps that looked related, but nothing really stood out. I was hoping to find something that could help me manage a character or maybe even run a whole game, but most of what I saw was just kinda basic.
I ended up grabbing one that seemed decent. It let me roll up a character, pick some stats, and choose a class. It felt a little clunky, honestly. Not super intuitive. After fiddling with it for a bit, I made a warrior-type dude. It was okay, but I kept thinking about how much easier it is to just do this stuff with a pencil and paper, you know? No swiping or tapping, just good old-fashioned dice rolls and scribbling on a character sheet.
Trying to Get into the Game
Then I thought, “Maybe I can find a group to play with online?” I mean, there’s gotta be people out there using these apps to play Pathfinder, right? So I started poking around some forums and online communities. Found a few folks talking about their experiences, but it seemed like a mixed bag.
- Some people were really into the whole digital character sheet thing. They liked how it kept track of everything for them, did all the math, and made it easy to level up.
- Others, like me, were a bit more skeptical. They missed the feel of real dice and the fun of flipping through a physical rulebook.
I did stumble across some discussions about the pros and cons of Pathfinder versus, say, D&D. Some folks were saying that Pathfinder is more complex, with tons of options for customizing your character. Others were saying it’s familiar if you’ve played older versions of D&D, but maybe too complicated for newbies. It’s all a bit overwhelming, if I’m being honest.
Giving Up for Now
After a few hours of messing around, I decided to call it quits for now. It just wasn’t grabbing me the way I hoped it would. Maybe I’m just old school, but I think I prefer the traditional way of playing these kinds of games. There’s something about the social aspect of sitting around a table with your buddies, rolling dice, and using your imagination that these apps just can’t replicate. But I found some really interesting modules, like “Seven Days to the Grave” and “Skeletons of Scarwall”. Those sound pretty epic, so maybe I’ll check those out in the future, and hope I can find a game in the real world.
I guess for now, I’ll stick to other games on my phone. Maybe I’ll give Pathfinder another shot someday, but for now, it’s just not my thing. It’s not that the apps are terrible or anything, they’re just… not the same, you know? They are all just like a crossover, safe, roomy, all right to look at.
And this little adventure reminded me a bit of my job hunt a while back. It was right when the pandemic started, and I was stuck back in my hometown. Got quarantined, lost my job, and ended up taking a completely different gig at a local research institute. It was a wild ride, but it taught me that sometimes, the best paths are the ones you don’t plan for. Just like with this Pathfinder thing – I went in expecting one thing and came out with something totally different. Funny how life works, huh?
