Okay, so, I decided it was time to upgrade my internet. You know how it is, everyone’s working from home these days, and my old connection just wasn’t cutting it anymore. I was getting, like, 400 Mbps down, which sounds okay, but with everyone online, it felt sluggish. I figured, let’s jump on this fiber optic thing everyone’s talking about.
First, I called up the internet company and asked about getting fiber installed. They sent a guy over to check things out. He took a look around, said it wouldn’t be a problem, and scheduled another day to actually do the installation.
On the install day, a couple of technicians showed up. They started running this new fiber cable from the pole outside, through the yard, and into my house. It was a bit of a process, drilling some holes and fishing the wire through the walls. But they knew what they were doing.
- Ran the fiber cable from the outside.
- Drilled a few holes to get it inside.
- Connected it to a new box they called an ONT.
Once they got the fiber inside, they hooked it up to this new box, I think they called it an “ONT” or something. Then, they plugged my router into that. I had all these coax cables for my TVs, but this was different. Thankfully I found out about something called SFP+ to RJ45 modules so I could still get my 10GbE networking going. Not sure if I had to go through all that, but I couldn’t find an answer I liked, and figured I would just make sure I had the option to use my old setup if I wanted to.
After that, they did some tests, made sure everything was working, and that was it. I ran a speed test, and bam, I was getting close to a gigabit per second! Way faster than before. I still had to do some stuff with my data using .ToString, but after that was fixed things were golden.
Honestly, the whole thing was smoother than I expected. Now my internet’s blazing fast, and everyone in the house can be online without any lag. If you’re thinking about getting fiber, I’d say go for it. It’s definitely worth the upgrade.
