So, I gotta tell you about my little adventure trying to get decent internet down here in Yorktown, Texas. Man, what a ride!
First off, I started hearing things about AT&T. Folks around town were saying they’re the go-to guys for internet in these parts. Seemed like everyone and their grandma was using them. So, I thought, “Okay, let’s check these guys out.”
Turns out, AT&T offers this thing called IPBB. Sounds fancy, right? Well, it’s basically their internet service, and they say it can go up to 25 Mbps for downloads. Not lightning fast, but hey, it’s something. They cover a good chunk of Yorktown too, like 60-something percent I think. Oh, and it starts at around 60 bucks a month.
- AT&T Internet
- IPBB Connection
- Up to 25 Mbps download speed
- $60/month
- Covers about 62% of Yorktown
I did some digging around, you know, just to see what else was out there. Turns out, there are like 8 companies offering internet here. Eight! Who knew, right? I mean, in a small town like this, you wouldn’t expect that many options.
Other Internet Options
One name that popped up was Hughesnet. They do satellite internet, which is pretty cool. I mean, you can get internet from space! They say they cover almost the whole town, like 99%. That’s pretty impressive. And they offer TV too.
But here’s the thing about internet speed. It’s all over the place! Sometimes I’m streaming a movie just fine, and other times it’s like I’m back in the dial-up days. I learned that it’s got a lot to do with where my router is, how far I am from it, and if there’s anything like walls messing with the signal.
And get this, sometimes it’s not even my router’s fault. It could be something with the cables outside, or too many people in my house using the internet at the same time. Or, and this one blew my mind, it could be something called a “slow DNS server.” What a headache.
There were a few times I was completely out of internet, and I found out about using my phone as a hotspot. You just connect your computer to your phone’s internet. It saved me a couple of times, I gotta say. I also made a note of the fastest way to get things back to normal.
So, that’s my internet story from Yorktown. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I’ve learned a lot. Hopefully, this helps someone else out there trying to figure out their internet situation in a small town.
It’s a wild world out there in the land of internet connections, that’s for sure.
